Back in Melbs now.Went for an art research visit to NYC. Pretty sure every Australian is going over there at the moment. The working at American Apparel reckons the store is constantly full of Aussies - interesting.
I wasn't into being the tourist photographer but I did get a heap of photos as le flanuer.

Oh and i'm currently making a big work for the upcoming 'Out of Bounds' exhibition at the FCAC (Footscray Community Arts Centre). Opening is on the 28th October 2011 at 6pm.

'Raise the Roof' - Annual Fundraiser for The Substation - this week

The Substation is a beautiful historic building and contemporary art space in the Newport.
It has strong community support and has been a great beacon for raising the profile of contemporary artists in the west.
They are not-for-profit and are running a big-ass fundraiser to help continue its longevity.

Opening night - Thursday May 26, 6-8pm
Exhibition runs - May 26 - June 5
Auction night - Friday June 3, 7:30pm.

'Monday glowface' complete for The Substation annual fundraiser

Finished my piece for the upcoming exhibition and auction at The Substation in Newport.
The Substation is a beautiful old building and amazing contemporary art space. The money raised from the auction will help keep this important space alive for the future.
The exhibition runs from the May 26 - June 3.

(I think I have the worst camera in the world).

The fundraising auction event is called 'Raise the Roof', it is held at The Substation in Newport on June 3 at 7:30pm, check out the details here. Shaun Micallef will be there amongst other comedians and musicians; Dave O'Neil, Cal Wilson, Rusty Rich, Rebecca Barnard and Lisa Miller.

There will also be works by James Smeaton, Geoffrey Ricardo, Mike Nicholls, Jo Darvall, Katrina Manton, and Sarah Shutt, and more.

Take away coffee cups in South Melbourne!

Airtime flag project - round one

Hobsons Bay Youth Services and HB Council have funded a new youth focused art space called Airtime. The space presents young artists artworks on 4 metre tell flags which are raised on Queen St Altona Meadows next to the Altona Meadows Skate Park.
The first round of artworks to go up are of the 2010 Laverton Youth Art Prize winners (Amy Redmond, Harry Ta, Josh Griffin, Caitlin Muscat, Jacinta Bykovec, Jake Latimer).
Next round of artists will feature our busy little StreetsmART team and should be up in July.

Second best in show at Art in Public Places

I does alright. Awarded second place for my Art in Public Places exhibition at Sassi, Williamstown.
Very thankful to the judges; Michael Brennan (Footscray Community Arts Centre), Erica Gofton (arts teacher and artist), and Hobsons Bay Mayor Michael Raffoul.

Art in Public Place exhibition at SASSI Williamstown

This month I'm doing Hobsons Bay Council's Art in Public Places show. I'm hanging some new works at Sassi Cafe, 79-83 Douglas Parade, Williamstown.

I was supposed to be showing '100 pocket-sized one-off framed artworks'... Turns out the particular frames I needed are not available anywhere... anymore. Instead, i've put in 100 numbered photos for people to grab for free from the front bar. Hope that makes up for it :)
I'm sharing the space with local artist Katherine Dine, and we are having an 'official celebration' at Sassi on Friday 8th at 6:30pm.
The works will be on show from today to Sunday 17th April.

The Cup Project - 100,000 cups!

The Cup Project is an incredible art project organised by Amy Craig.
Publishing works by selected artists on 100,000 take-away coffee cups to be distributed in Melbourne cafes.
I've got some work in, so does good old Max Milne.

Terra Verte is an exhibition and auction supporting Janet Rice's campaign for The Greens in Footscray.
I've just finished the artwork i'm donating. 'Sandwich belt' is more a drawing than a painting. I'm diggin sandwiches at the moment (and carrying things on my back).

35mm colour film Holga photos

This photography thing has been a great thrill. My Holga camera doesn't get in the way of taking photos.

There's no 'live view' on a LCD screen and no 'delete' button. I take it as a license to act simply and thoughtfully sloppy.

I've been experimenting with 35mm colour film. Simply because it's fairly less expensive to buy and develop.

But more so because the image gets exposed over the border and over the film sprockets.

I'm pleased :)

Bought a cute old plastic camera the other day. Enjoying the whole tedious process of loading film, taking it in to get developed, and doing it all over again.
Here's a couple of the better ones from the first roll.

They were supposed to be developed in colour, but the bananas at the camera shop did it in black and white. Oh well, still good :)

The Blank Canvas exhibition at the Laverton Community Centre was on this weekend. Lots of interesting new works from local artists. I'm a bit of a fan of Eunice Cooper's seascape paintings and Giuseppe Depetro's crafty crushed glass pieces.

SUB12 Group Exhibition in Newport

Some of my stuff at the SUB12 Exhibition at The Substation, 1 Market Road, Newport.
It's worth going down to check out the venue itself. Giant red brick cube of historic building, converted into gallery and performance spaces.

The walls haven't been painted over yet, so you will still be able to see the artwork if you go down there after the exhibition. I hope it stays up for a looooong time.
